The Internal Martial Arts have been part of my life for over 35 years. I started teaching in 1988 and have spent my career seeking out the best teachers around the world to become a better practitioner and teacher.
Why should you practice? The internal martial arts have many benefits and if you are at this site you have at least some idea of why they are so profound and beneficial.
With these practices, there are 5 different directions you can take the practice.
I have been practicing martial arts for over 36 years, learning from internationally recognized masters from seven countries, and earning the equivalent of black belts in the martial arts of: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Eskrima, Tai Chi, Qigong, Muay Thai, and Kenpo.
Over the last 26 years, I have taught over 25,000 students in my martial arts academy, Northwest Fighting Arts. It is one of the largest and most successful in the Pacific Northwest with over 500 currently active students.
Like most serious martial arts students, I began to seek out information that would explain why high-level martial arts are personally transformative for so many people. It soon became evident that all of my teachers incorporated meditative aspects into their training regimes. This led me to studying the meditative arts and their historical, philosophical, and health underpinnings. What I learned, while gaining expertise in a wide range of martial and meditative arts, is that reaching high levels of expertise in each art requires mastery of the yielding concept.
My strongest passion is linking the benefits of meditative and martial arts practices together and applying them to the broader life experience. And, in particular, I feel the need to emphasize the amazing benefits attendant to the yielding awareness that underlies all of these arts. My passion continues to be driven by having witnessed these practices and the yielding concept work dramatic and positive changes in countless numbers of my students. To that end, I have written three books and produced two audio courses and hundreds of instructional videos.

I started teaching martial arts to a handful of students in the basement of my house until joining the United States Marine Corps (USMC). There I was assigned to teach knife fighting techniques to a battalion of over 1000 Marines prior to their shipping out for the first Gulf War. Once there, my job was to set and defuse anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. My martial arts training had taught me yielding’s enhanced external and internal awareness skills that allowed me to be successful in the USMC.
After leaving the marines, I attended Portland State University, earning two bachelor’s degrees in business finance and business management. Soon after I opened up Portland Tai Chi Academy/Northwest Fighting Arts.
