Tai Chi For Beginners

How Does It Work? Who Is This For?

Tai Chi is for anyone who wants to improve their health or add a fun and challenging practice into their life. Also, if you have been practicing Tai Chi, but feel you have come to a standstill in your training this will help you move past your current hurdle. If you are an Instructor who is looking to develop your skills and add to your curriculum then this is for you. Our program is perfect for all skill levels.

The Internal Martial Arts have been part of my life for over 35 years. I started teaching in 1988 and have spent my career seeking out the best teachers around the world to become a better practitioner and teacher.

Why should you practice? The internal martial arts have many benefits and if you are at this site you have at least some idea of why they are so profound and beneficial.

With these practices, there are 5 different directions you can take the practice.

Meet Your Instructor – Sifu Jeff

I have been practicing martial arts for over 36 years, learning from internationally recognized masters from seven countries, and earning the equivalent of black belts in the martial arts of: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Eskrima, Tai Chi, Qigong, Muay Thai, and Kenpo.

Over the last 26 years, I have taught over 25,000 students in my martial arts academy, Northwest Fighting Arts. It is one of the largest and most successful in the Pacific Northwest with over 500 currently active students.

Like most serious martial arts students, I began to seek out information that would explain why high-level martial arts are personally transformative for so many people. It soon became evident that all of my teachers incorporated meditative aspects into their training regimes. This led me to studying the meditative arts and their historical, philosophical, and health underpinnings. What I learned, while gaining expertise in a wide range of martial and meditative arts, is that reaching high levels of expertise in each art requires mastery of the yielding concept.

My strongest passion is linking the benefits of meditative and martial arts practices together and applying them to the broader life experience. And, in particular, I feel the need to emphasize the amazing benefits attendant to the yielding awareness that underlies all of these arts. My passion continues to be driven by having witnessed these practices and the yielding concept work dramatic and positive changes in countless numbers of my students. To that end, I have written three books and produced two audio courses and hundreds of instructional videos.

I started teaching martial arts to a handful of students in the basement of my house until joining the United States Marine Corps (USMC). There I was assigned to teach knife fighting techniques to a battalion of over 1000 Marines prior to their shipping out for the first Gulf War. Once there, my job was to set and defuse anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. My martial arts training had taught me yielding’s enhanced external and internal awareness skills that allowed me to be successful in the USMC.

After leaving the marines, I attended Portland State University, earning two bachelor’s degrees in business finance and business management. Soon after I opened up Portland Tai Chi Academy/Northwest Fighting Arts.

Over the last 26 years, I have taught over 20,000 students in my martial arts academy, Portland Tai Chi Academy/Northwest Fighting Arts. It is one of the largest and most successful in the Pacific Northwest with over 500 currently active students.

I have taken everything I’ve learned over the years and put it into dozens of lessons that you can watch. Become one of my students from anywhere in the world! Let me teach you the essential elements and principles of the practice and how to incorporate it into your daily life. It can improve your mental peace, positivity, physical strength, reduce high blood pressure and increase mobility. Become my student today with my online course!

The heart of Tai Chi training is based on these three pillars: The Body, The Breath, and The Mind.

By developing all three of these areas you can become truly limitless.

Here’s SOME OF WHAT YOU WILL BE LEARNING…

  • Training the body is part of the foundation of any successful meditation practice. It begins with restoring good posture and alignment. Without restoring natural alignment we exist in a constant state of instability. This drains our energy and can lead to injury and illness. Try this now. Press up lightly with the crown of your head, look forward and up a few degrees out to the horizon, and take three deep breaths. Go ahead try it…. Improving the body improves the mind and spirit.
  • We all have our own personal perspective. It defines how we view ourselves and determines our response to the myriad opportunities in life. For almost EVERYONE, successful or not, their perspective was determined by chance. Our reactions to formative experiences added together; year after year; the good, bad and ugly all mixed in. Well, imagine you had no limits and could change anything about your behavior and worldview. By training the mind you will learn how to recognize old patterns and move toward desired patterns. Your increased mental awareness will give you the tools to make these changes more effortlessly than ever before.
  • The next stage of this training restores the breath. There is a direct connection between mental/emotional stress and how you breathe. Most of us have developed a Stress-Breath, a habit of shallow and artificially rapid breathing. Simply freeing the breath and developing the positive habit of deep, fluid breathing is a game changer for most people. From there we explore advanced breathing techniques. We can use these techniques to shift our mental state at will.
